It is August and we are still in lockdown. It continues to be very cold. Ever since the beginning of COVID hunger has been our number one priority. Very sadly it continues on an upward spiral with thousands more people joining queues looking for food assistance. Charities have become overwhelmed with requests and our sabbatical seems to be suspended again.
This lockdown was accompanied by added pressure to the economy due to the extreme poverty in the country caused by COVID and the imprisonment of Jacob Zuma, which took place during July. The situation sparked riots and looting, resulting in large-scale job losses. Disruption in distribution of food supply chains caused further food and fuel shortages.
With the country under so much pressure and people suffering so much even though we are a small organization, we did as much as we could to increase our contributions. Our intention was to counteract the additional sadness and hardships that so many more people were facing by throwing even more kindness at it. Starting with the Jewish Holy Days.
Our donations were made to the Chevrah Kadisha, Yad Aharon and Michael, and The Union of Jewish Woman. We are certain that all the recipients enjoyed very special and joyous Holy Days. We usually do not start before September. However because the Holy Days start early this year, we have been inundated with appeals for assistance with meals and food parcels. Red Bagels decided to respond with a donation as big as we could. Our intention is to give everyone something special to smile about.
Red Bagels also managed to give a donation to The Sydenham Shul for their yearly fundraiser. We are aware that Sydenham Shul spreads a lot of happiness and unity in the community through the money it collects. It was a very successful event.
We are so grateful that August ended up being an unexpectedly busy and happy month.
Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.
Powered by love and committed to kindness. Enjoy bringing love and kindness into the world.
