June 2020

Winter has arrived a little late and yet we were still unprepared for the few extremely cold spells that greeted us throughout this month. South Africans are sun lovers and so we the cold weather is not usually welcomed. This is especially true this year. Coupled with the unfortunate, although expected, fast rise in COVID cases due to the country dropping to a level 3 lockdown with fewer restrictions and more freedom of movement, there was another sudden increase in requests for charity. Charities are really struggling under the continuous requests for assistance as more and more people have to deal with illnesses, hunger, inadequate shelter, and unemployment, among a host of other problems with the Covid-19 pandemic quickly moving towards record figures of infections. We at Red Bagels were very thankful to once again be available to offer our assistance and make small, yet significant contribution to some very needy charities.

Red Bagels received a letter from the Chevera Kadisha with an urgent call to support their Emergency Relief Fund. We are very grateful we were once again able to make a donation to the Chevrah Kadisha.

This is the request from the Chevrah Kadisha:

For the first time in the Chev’s 132 years of service, we are forced to send out an emergency appeal for help.

The financial burden we carry is always great, but right now, the pressures are unparalleled. In addition to the thousands of people we are already assisting every month and the 1,000 vulnerable residents we are protecting (at great expense) in our facilities, we are also receiving many new requests for financial assistance each week from families.

Without hesitation, Red Bagels stepped up and helped out. We are delighted we could manage to help with this request. Being aware this is a dire situation that is long term, we appeal to anyone who can help to do so. You can make a difference through simply watching, liking, and sharing this video about the Chevra Kadisha’s Emergency Fund.

Our second project of the month was a donation to The EPIC foundation. Facilitated through C.O.N.E.C.K.T’s  CEO  Naomi Schauer, whom Red Bagels is proud to partner with, Red Bagels made a donation to the EPIC Foundation that donated care packages.

About the EPIC Foundation: The Gauteng-based EPIC Foundation works with survivors of Gender Based Violence (GBV). Red Bagels made a donation that provided 200 comfort packs for rape victims, abused women, and children, whom the EPIC Foundation provides services to. Their comfort packs contain many essential items. This comfort pack is given to each person the EPIC Foundation works with in order to help alleviate and deal with immediate needs. In addition the Foundation holds the victims hand through all of the legal, medical, physical, and emotional steps and takes them from a victim to a survivor of their experiences. Similar to the Chevra Kadisha’s situation, Corona has confounded the situation and many more people have found themselves victims of GBV and other similar situations. C.O.N.E.C.K.T. has used its powers to connect Red Bagels to pay volunteers to pack these packs. This means that everyone wins. In addition, C.O.N.E.C.K.T. has made sure that all the comfort packs support other charities or South African business in order to maximize the impact on charities and South African employment.

Have a beautiful day.
