September 2020

September started off a little unusual with a blast of icy cold weather. What else could have been expected from the year 2020?!

Two days later thank goodness, on Monday morning we woke up to the first sunny day of spring with a renewed energy, which was most welcomed. We put a spring in our step that spring boarded us right into a sunshiny month with renewed energy and our usual commitment to kindness. September had finally shown it’s true colours in every way. Yes, September is otherwise known as the happy month when “Spring has Sprung”. Everything is alive with the anticipation of newness, possibility, new beginnings, second chances, and most of all lots of beautiful South African Sunshine. Magically the spring blossoms covered the trees in gorgeous colours and green leave appeared once more. With birds filling the air with songs while building their nests, spring has certainly helped lift our spirits. It really is a special time of the year! And with all of this came more smiles and laughter as you will soon read.

At this time of year, and particularly this year, the most urgent requests that need to be addressed sadly remain food shortages for people in all walks of life. This month starts the celebrations of Jewish High Holy Days. Therefore Red Bagels concentrated on providing essential foods needed for these particular Holy Days, not only to provide food but also to enable the recipient families to have joyous, peaceful, and meaningful celebrations.

Here is how we achieved our goal:

Our donated to the Chevra Kadisha was able to sponsor 93 families with all that is required to enjoy their meals, including the special species of fruits and symbolic foods that are required to complete the new year celebratory meals appropriately. Assuring that these families had a very happy and positive start to their new year.

An additional donation was made to the Yad Aharon and Michael Food Fund. This unbelievable charity runs a daily soup kitchen and regularly provides food parcels for 680 families in need. The numbers of whom are unfortunately continuing to grow, especially with Corona. Yad Aharon is such a deserving and worthy charity and we are always enthusiastic and happy to be able to assist them.

Hatzolah is another incredibly deserving charity we work with who continues to work tirelessly looking after our community’s medical needs in cases of emergencies. We salute them with a donation at this time of year.

Red Bagels again partnered with the Sydenham Foundation for the Future for their annual fundraiser, which allows whatever is donated on the day of fundraiser to be matched. Therefore all contributions were doubled, including ours. We are excited to have been able to assist in their fundraising initiative again this year. R2 Million was raised this year! Well done for a very successful campaign. We wish them an outstanding year.

Another familiar name that we were able to donate to again this year is D.L. Link. It is an exceptional charity making the tally of our contributions number to 5 worthy causes.

September ended up being a truly happy and sunshiny month during which we achieved our goal of leaving behind us a lot more happiness and many more smiles.

New day, new thoughts, new strength, new possibilities, and new opportunities to spread more kindness. “Spring has Sprung” Red Bagels into a successful start to the season.

Have a beautiful day.
